As is vividly depicted in the drawing, in the middle of the cartoon stands a hot pot, containing many Chinese cultural symbols, such as Beijing operas, Daoism, and some foreigh cultural symbols, etc. How impressive the drawing is in describing the common phenomenon that Chinese culture is becoming increasingly integrated into the world. The drawer’s intention seems to be highly self-evident and the meaning causes us to be thought-provoking

It holds to be apparent that the cartoon is indicative of a pervasive phenomenon with regard to culture. When it comes to(一谈到) cultureits great impacts and benefits can’t be too estimated. As China opens to the outside world, our traditional culture is embracing the foreign culture, thus making our Chinese culture more diversified, colorful and internationalized just like a melting pot. What the picture conveys goes far beyond this. The fact that people from different countries are attracted to each other, indicating that to some extent different cultures can be acceptedrespectedappreciated and shared internationally. Or put it in another way, Chinese unique culture can become international through worldwide cultural exchanges. Since the trend of globalization become irresistible, cultural integration can effectively improve mutual understanding and friendship among different countries.

In my personal sense, Chinese national culture as priceless spiritual treasure should be preserved and cherished. Meanwhilethere are good reasons to embrace foreign cultures on the ground that those ideas from other cultures can provide different perspectives for us to observe the world in the long run. Howeverconfronted with a different culturewe should be sensible enough to absorb its essence and to resist its dark side. Only in this way can we promote cultural integration positively, thus making our motherland dimensional, colorful and vigorous. (298 words)

Dear Li Lei,

In your last letter, you asked me to recommend an American movie to help you exercise your oral English. After careful consideration, I strongly recommend Titanic, which is one of my favorite movies.

There are many reasons for my recommendation. First of all, its language is very clear and can be easily imitated. It is very helpful to improve your oral English. What’s more, its plot is very touching. It tells of a love story between the two protagonists, Jack and Rose, who are members of different social classes. They fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. Finally ,when the ship was about to sink ,the scene was very touching .The writer and director James Cameron say the love story as a way to engage the audience with the real-life tragedy.

I believe you will enjoy this movie and I hope to receive your comments soon

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

As you can see in the drawing above, two people are taking in the scenery on a boat floating smoothly on the surface of the lake, reading a newspaper and enjoying their picnic. It is all pleasant and relaxed. However, when you look at the lower part of the drawing, you will see another picture which stands in marked contrast to the upper part: a lot of rubbish, such as empty bottles, plastic bags and leftovers , are scattered all over the lake. What a “beautiful” view! Furthermore, there is an ironic caption under the drawing, which reads “the ‘remains’ of the journey”.

What this thought-provoking drawing mirrors is the phenomenon that the environment of tourist areas is polluted by tourists. The problem of tourist pollution has been known for years. Many tourist areas suffer from a litter problem. Litter in tourist areas spoils the view, pollutes the environment, and takes time and money to clean up. Moreover, the graffiti problem also affects many tourist attractions. Some tourists carve the characters like “someone has visited this place” on the wall or statues, which causes damage, irremediable in some cases, to the cultural relics and historic sites.

In view of all the harmful influences of tourist pollution, I think it is high time that we took measures to tackle the problem. To begin with, we should raise public awareness of tourism environmental protection. In addition,  the administration of the tourist locations should take legal measures to fine those visitors who damage cultural relics. Only in this way can we solve the problem of tourist pollution and leave the beautiful sights to other visitors.

Dear friends,

On behalf of the Students’ Union, I am writing to extend my warm welcome to all the international students that are coming to our university. I firmly believe that your entering our university will bring us new ideas from different cultures and promote communication .

Also, we have some suggestions before you come to our university. As you all know, we have a great much free time in college and the teachers don’t oversee us strictly. Therefore, it is recommended that you can arrange your time properly and avoid being indulged in computer games, etc. Moreover, in order to make yourselves quickly adjusted to our campus life, it would be of great help if you can learn Chinese as well as you can. Last but not the least, it is necessary to take part in some activities so that you can improve your communication abilities and expand horizon.

We are looking forward to seeing you soon and wish everything goes well.

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

As is shown in the picture above, two men react in completely opposite ways when faced with the same event: A bottle fell off on the ground, and the wine inside spilt out. One is smiling, feeling glad that he still has the rest half of the wine while the other is sighing in great desperation saying that “everything screwed up!”

The cartoon tells us that being optimistic and being pessimistic are two different attitudes towards life. Faced with a challenge, a pessimistic person may feel gloomy and distressed. He considers himself powerless, and complains about it all day long, refusing even to have a try before giving it up in the end. An optimistic person, however, may adopt an entirely different approach. He may not regard the challenge as something that bad; instead, he takes it as an excellent opportunity to display his abilities and talent. As an old saying goes, “The way you perceive the world will determine your way to cope with it.”

In my point of view, though it is natural that we encounter challenges of one kind or another in our life, we should be optimistic whenever we are confronted with challenges. If we are pessimistic, we are destined to fail, ending up accomplishing nothing. But if we approach the challenges in an optimistic way, we may go from victory to victory.

Recently, there has been a growing concern among the public over the topic of the choice after graduation. As is described in the picture, a group of graduates are facing various roads to go, such as searching for jobs, pursuing further study, going abroad and becoming entrepreneurs. The picture intends to convey us that, as adults, college graduates have to make their own decisions about future life.

After graduation, college students should choose future life based on their own realities and dreams. For those, who are eager to become economically independent and to put into practice what they have learned in college, taking a job or doing poineering work may be satisfying and rewarding. Getting established as a bread-winner after graduation is their main desire. By contrast, others who want to take advantage of the favorable conditions in college, however, ought to try to enroll in graduate programs inside or outside. For them, a Master's degree or even a Doctoral degree represents a much more ambitious goal than a bachelor's degree, because they cherish lifetime success and interest more in academic achievements than money.

It is sensible that we should take a rational attitude towards the decisive choice. For the part of my own, getting a higher degree abroad has long been my dream. I’m a strong believer that one should do more research and learn more while he or she is still young.

Dear Mr. President,

It is my great honor to write to you. As far as I am concerned, we have enough extraordinary lectures and what we need now is physical exercise.

Since most of the time is spent in watching TV and playing computer games, our physical conditions are not good enough. i still have some suggestions for you. To begin with, our university should arrange more PE classes. To continue, we should have a fixed schedule for a certain time of outdoor activity. What is more, teaching faculty should be involved in the same kind of physical exercise.

I hope that our university could take the responsibility for our students physical health. I will be highly grateful if you could take my suggestions into account.

As we can see from the picture, a young mother was holding a little girl’s hand thirty years ago and now the girl is holding her mother’s arm. The girl and the mother always walk in step with each other. The author’s real purpose is not as simple as the picture itself, but to lead observers to find out what hides behind the iceberg.

When we were little children, we needed to rely on our parents. They give us our lives, give us support and all their love. They always provide us with all the things that they have. When we grow up, our parents become older. Then they need us to take care of them. However, as young people are quite busy with their working, they rarely have time to visit their parents, talk with them and accompany them, which leads many parents to become empty nesters. They live lonely and they long for a chat with their children to share happiness and sorrow in the life. In order to reduce the loneliness of our parents, we should go to visit our parents frequently and take care of them. Even if we are quite busy for a certain period, we should call our parents on a daily basis to get to know their feelings and physical conditions.

In conclusion, we need to accompany our parents in their lives, just as what they did when we were young. We should spare time to visit our parents and suffice their wishes. In this case, the world will be full of love.

I am writing to tell you about a fantastic book I have just read, as we always share the same taste of books.

The book is called Journey to the West, which tells us a story that four monks conquered multiple handicaps to achieve their final destination. Besides the touching and thrilling plot, the book also features humorous languages, thanks to the talented author.

So I recommend it to all of you as one of the favorite books that I have ever read. I am sure you will love it as much as I do. I am looking forward to discussing more with you after you read it.

A group of friends, boys or girls, are having a dinner party while each one of them is checking messages in their mobile phones without saying a word to one another, leaving the dishes untouched. We are informed that this is a gathering in the era of mobile phone.

The above picture unveils a common social phenomenon and the symbolic meaning of the photo is the effect of the mobile phone on people's way of life. Undoubtedly, the phone provides us with considerable convenience, making many things possible which are beyond our dreams. As a communication tool, the phone makes us closer than ever before by providing immediate communication. Meanwhile, there are negative effects on our personal life. As is shown in the picture, people are imprisoned in their own world! They choose contacting online rather than communicating face to face.

Accordingly, enjoying the convenience provided by the phones, we should bear in mind that human beings are social beings who need real interpersonal interactions! Joint efforts are needed to ensure people to have face-to-face communication! I believe a harmonious relationship between friends is awaiting us if we set aside our mobile phones and enjoy the untouched meal!
