Printed media used to be the only resource of knowledge and information, but in the A to B (atom to bit) age, every tangible thing is being uploaded onto the cloud, and it’s a fact that the publishing industry is suffering. In this essay, both pros and cons of the “A to B” change associated with knowledge will be discussed on an objective stance.
A to B (atom to bit): 原子到比特(原子是物体的最小构成单位，比特是电子存储的最小单位，形容实物被电子化的现象)

One of the most obvious flaws of the trend lies in the reliability. Since internet can not a substitute for the library, the most reliable scholarly information is only available in books and journals, and search engines are only a carrier of what have been published. This means that once the internet fails, there is a huge risk of losing the valuable knowledge. We all know that top hackers can even destroy the national archive security system, so can they cancel any possible documents stored on the internet. Another harm of placing all knowledge on WWW is related to individual health. We have to check all information we need by staring at the screen of electronic devices once all information is uploaded, which may lead to eye fatigue. Longer screen time can put a real strain on our eyes, the burning and itchy sensations will be a great trouble, and the computer vision syndrome may be a common disease for every individual in the future.

Despite all these drawbacks, there are more benefits can be seen. First and foremost, it’s time saving. Before the internet was available, we used to flock to the library and searched for the book that contained relevant information. For readers, the travelling time is quite a waste; as librarian, they spend tons of hours organizing and categorizing the large number of books. However, thanks to the internet, all those work can be done by a computer. Internet is much faster to use in finding information regarding a particular subject than books are. Moreover, internet provides video, sound and visual experience to the surfer, while books only offer the text information. With the multimedia assistant, we are more motivated and inspired to learn; different types of leaners can also find their most proper way to capture the knowledge. Additionally, internet has far greater penetration in houses as it’s a space saver compared with books, so the infinite amount of knowledge can be accessible within finite terabytes.

Although it is not wise to totally replace the traditional libraries with virtual ones, the advantages of using internet to reserve knowledge do outweigh it’s disadvantages.
